1949 Won the Jr. Flyweight Golden Gloves Championship in Burlington
1950 Won the Main Event as a flyweight in the Polio Drive Benefits Contest
1950, Spent the summer training with the U.S. Marine Corps boxing team at Camp Lejeune but the Korean War interrupted the opportunity to continue.
1951-1954 Joined the U.S. Coast Guard during the Korean War afterwards returning to Concord High School to continue his studies
1964 112-lb Champion in NC’s Golden Gloves Tournament
Invited to the 1964 Carolinas Golden Gloves Tournament
