James Clary Phillips

Concord High School 1953-1957

  • 1948-1950 Concord Boys Club Boxing Team as a 98 lb. Flyweight and later moving up to the 112-lb. Bantamweight class

  • In 1949, Clary played on the Concord Boys Club North Carolina State Championship 125-lb football team

  • 1949 Won the Jr. Flyweight Golden Gloves Championship in Burlington 

  • 1950 Won the Main Event as a flyweight in the Polio Drive Benefits Contest 

  • 1950, Spent the summer training with the U.S. Marine Corps boxing team at Camp Lejeune but the Korean War interrupted the opportunity to continue.

  • 1951-1954 Joined the U.S. Coast Guard during the Korean War afterwards returning to Concord High School to continue his studies

  • 1964 112-lb Champion in NC’s Golden Gloves Tournament

  • Invited to the 1964 Carolinas Golden Gloves Tournament

  • Career Record was 18 Wins and 2 losses

  • Attended Appalachian State Teachers College and Queens College
