Harold "Lug" Leazer

Outstanding 3-sport athlete playing Football, Basketball and Baseball 

Football Offensive and Defensive tackle/guard 

1933 Two-way starter and Honorable Mention All-Conference guard

1934 Two-way starter, Team Captain, All-Conference as a tackle, punter and kicker.  Had a 94-yard punt against Hickory High School on November 29^th

1935 Two-way starter, Team Captain, All-Conference as a tackle, punter and kicker. Received Honorable Mention on the Charlotte News All-Star Team

Basketball 1933-1936 playing center, and starting all 4 years.

Entered the U.S. Army Air Corps at the onset of World War II and was Commissioned as a Pilot. He was assigned to the European Theater of Operations flying dangerous missions.  On June 26, 1944, while piloting a B-24 Liberator, he was shot down and killed over Austria.

The highest and most prestigious award a Football player at J.W. Cannon and later at A.L. Brown High School is the coveted “Lug Leazer Trophy.” This trophy was presented to J.W. Cannon High School in 1945 to be honored as a memorial for Harold “Lug” Leazer who lost his life in 1944 during World War II defending Our Country. This trophy is awarded  annually to a football player, voted by his teammates, who has shown good sportsmanship and leadership during the year, qualities which “Lug” Leazer always displayed throughout his life.
