J. W. Cannon 1946 – 1950

  • Football 1947 – 1949 Outstanding Running Back, Defensive Back and Captain of the 1949 Team.

  • Baseball 1947 - 1950 Outstanding Pitcher leading the team to 3 straight Conference Championships in 1948, 1949 and 1950. In 1948 they won the WNCHSAA State 3-A Championship

  • 1949 was All-County, All-Conference and All-State. He had a batting average of .361 and was a defensive standout. 

  • 1950 had 8 wins and only 1 loss as a Pitcher making All-County and All-Conference.

  • Played American Legion Baseball for Post 115 1947 – 1948. The 1947 team Won the American Legion Region 4 Championship, Sectional Championship and NC State Championship

  • 1948 pitched and played outfield but due to the Polio Epidemic it forced the season to be cancelled 

  • 1949 played Semi-Pro Baseball in the Albemarle League and was a successful Pitcher, Outfielder and Hitter.

  • 1950 Pitched for Great Falls, SC in the Central Catawba League and had a 14 win 7 loss record. He made the All-Star Team as a Pitcher.

  • 1951 signed a MLB contract with the Pittsburg Pirates at age 20 and was assigned to the Salisbury Pirates of the NC Class “D”. He finished his 1st year with 8 wins as a Pitcher. In 1952 he played for the Elkin Blanketeers and won 5 games. In 2 years of Professional Baseball he appeared in 62 games, Pitched 266 innings, had 32 hits as an outfielder with a .229 Batting Average.
