John McInnis

Concord High School 1924-1928

  • Football, Basketball and Baseball standout for 4 years in each sport

  • Attended college 1928-1932 receiving a degree in Education

  • Worked in the Concord City School System 40 years as a Teacher and Principal 

  • 1940 started the Cabarrus County Sports and Recreation Department opening the Recreation Center on Academy Avenue that is still in use today

  • In Downtown Concord, he opened the Community Center Swimming Pool (called the “Y”) developing a lifeguard staff that taught CPR / First Aid along with swimming lessons for the youth of Cabarrus County for 40 years

  • He served as Principal of Coltrane-Webb Elementary School, Transportation Supervisor for Concord City Schools and the Director of Head Start Program in 1960s

  • The Aquatic Center on Academy Avenue is named in his honor
